Management Team

Christophe Bonny, PhD, Chief Executive Officer
Christophe Bonny, a founder of Xigen, is a molecular biologist with 15 years experience in the field of molecular biology and signaling pathways. Christophe developed XG-102, the most specific non-ATP competitive inhibitor yet of the JNK protein, a critical signaling hub controlling many inflammatory and degenerative diseases. His research has been honored by the Servier Foundation and the Pfizer prize, among others. Christophe’s entrepreneurial spirit has been honored by the NETS (New Entrepreneur in Technology and Sciences) Prize.

Dennis J. Church, PhD, Research and Alliance Director
Dennis Church is a biochemist with 15 years experience in drug discovery and development in inflammation, neurology, endocrinology and cardiology. Dennis was formerly Group Leader in biochemical pharmacology at the Battelle Memorial Research Institute, Head of Screening at GlaxoWelcome I.M.B., and Senior Scientist at Serono International. He has additional experience in business development, the evaluation of external opportunities and strategic planning.

Géraldine Dury, Director of Operations and Legal Manager
Géraldine Dury is a lawyer and holds a Master’s degree in business law and a degree in  legal management of companies. Géraldine brings 7 years of legal and management expertise gained in the biotech and pharmaceutical industries. Géraldine is the author of several articles published in professional journals.

Marc Mathieu, PhD, Head of Chemistry
Marc Mathieu is an organic chemist with 12 years experience in the field of peptide and bioorganic chemistry, with a strong background in analytical and combinatorial chemistry. Marc gained international drug-discovery and Pharma experience from Mimotopes Pty Ltd (Melbourne, Australia) and RMF Dictagene (Lausanne, Switzerland). He is the author of several papers presenting new concepts and challenging syntheses.

Christian Pasquali, PhD, Head of Cell Biology
Christian Pasquali holds a PhD in Biotechnology in Enzymatic Biology from UTC. He has more than fifteen years experience in biochemistry (University of Geneva), basic research, organelle-based proteomics (IMP, Vienna) and signal transduction with a main focus on kinases, lipid signaling, leucocytes and cytokines in the field of inflammation (MerckSerono, Geneva). With a strong interest in translational research, he was in charge of identifying new targets as well as developing disease-relevant cell-based-assays to progress candidates from target discovery to hit and lead discovery.

Elmar Schärli, Swiss Certified Accountant, Chief Financial Officer
Elmar joined the company in 2004. He is the founder and CEO of Ante Treuhand Ltd, a fiduciary firm based in Düdingen. Before founding Ante Treuhand Ltd, Elmar gathered a strong experience in the areas of controlling, consolidation, international tax planning and treasury as deputy CFO and Head of F&C in a Swiss Company listed on the stock exchange. As CFO of Xigen, he and his team are assuring the daily business in accounting, personnel administration, budget, cash planning and taxes. He brings several years of experience in accounting, auditing, tax advising and consulting for Swiss based and internationally active companies as well as for Start-up companies.

Business Development Advisor

Stephen Harris, PhD, Business Development Consultant
Stephen Harris is a molecular geneticist with >20 years experience in drug discovery and business development (in/out-licensing). He was formerly Chief Business Development Officer at Trophos, a neurology focused biotechnology company based in Marseille, France and Director, Business Development for technology platforms and multiple therapeutic areas at GlaxoSmithKline. He has additional experience of corporate development and communications in the biotechnology industry as well as R&D management experience covering discovery functions and technology platforms while at Glaxo.

Prof. Stefan Catsicas, PhD, Chairman of the Board
Chairman of Tilocor Life Science & former Vice President of the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology (EPFL)
Stefan Catsicas joined Xigen as Chairman of the Board of Directors in October 2005. He brings 20 years of scientific and management expertise gained at distinguished academic and industrial institutions. Key appointments were Department Head at Glaxo (Geneva), Professor and Chairman of the Cell Biology Department at the School of Medicine of the University of Lausanne and Professor, Vice-president and Research Director at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology, also in Lausanne. He has been an advisor to start-up and major companies, investment funds and research foundations in the field of biotechnology in Europe and in the USA. He resigned from his academic duties in 2005 to set up and chair the Tilocor Group, Xigen’s majority investor.

Prof. Tamas Bartfai, PhD, Director of the Dorris Neurological Research Center at Scripps & former Director of CNS Research at Hoffman-La Roche
Tamas Bartfai is a prominent neuroscientist and Director of the Harold L. Dorris Neurological Research Center at The Scripps Research Institute. In addition, he holds the Harold L. Dorris Chair in Neuroscience. The center was formed with a $10 million commitment from Helen L. Dorris of San Diego. Professor Bartfai is former Head of Central Nervous System Research at Hoffman-La Roche, in Basel, Switzerland. Most of his professional career was spent in academia at Stockholm University, most recently as Chairman, Department of Neurochemistry and Neurotoxicity.

Prof. Pascal Nicod, MD, Vice Dean of the Faculty of Medicine & Head of the Dept. of Medicine, University Hospital, Lausanne
Pascal Nicod, a co-founder of Xigen, is Head of the Department of Medicine at the CHUV Hospital in Lausanne, Switzerland and Vice-Dean of the Faculty of Medicine. He is a trained physician who specialized in cardiology and previously held various medical positions at the UCSD Medical Center in San Diego. His work has led to more than two hundred peer-reviewed publications and has received awards from Pfizer, Novartis, Roche, the Swiss Diabetes Association, the Swiss Society of Internal Medicine, the Swiss Society of Cardiology and the American Physiological Society. He also heads a number of foundations such as the Bodnar Center for Clinical Research, dedicated to bridging the gap between physicians and the basic sciences.

Jean-Blaise Eckert, MBA, Partner at Lenz & Staehelin
Jean-Blaise Eckert joined Xigen as a Director in 2006. He is a Partner of Lenz & Staehelin, the largest law firm in Switzerland with offices in Geneva, Zurich and Lausanne. Jean-Blaise is a certified tax expert, and his main field of activity is advice to corporate clients in commercial, corporate and tax matters. He is a member of several professional organisations in Switzerland, a member of the Swiss Committee of the International Fiscal Association (IFA), and a regular speaker in Switzerland and abroad. He advises a number of clients active in the biotechnology field.

Michel Aguet, MD
Michel Aguet is a Professor at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology (EPFL). He has been leading the Molecular Biology Department at Genentech Inc. and was then appointed director of the Swiss Institute for Experimental Cancer Research (ISREC).

Peter M A Calverley, MD
Peter M A Calverley is Professor of Respiratory Medicine, University of Liverpool; Honorary Consultant Physician, University Hospital Aintree.

Prof. Peter Clarke, PhD, Department of Cellular Biology and Morphology, University of Lausanne, Switzerland
Peter Clarke is an expert on neuronal death, and more than 80 of his papers in international journals focus on this subject. His research has been recognized by the attribution of several international awards.

Riccardo Dalla-Favera, MD
Riccardo Dalla-Favera,M.D., Professor of Pathology, Genetics & Development and Director of the Herbert Irving Comprehensive Cancer Center at Columbia University.He has been a member of the Boards of  Scientific  Counselors at the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences, USA.

Bonnie Hepburn, MD, Independent Consultant
Dr. Hepburn is a rheumatologist with 43 years of clinical experience and 22 years of experience in drug development. She is a former chairman of the FDA's Arthritis Advisory Committee and currently holds an unsalaried position as Clinical Professor of Medicine at UCSD.

Pierre Michetti, MD Associate
Professor at the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Lausanne, Switzerland, and Past Chief of the Division of Gastroenterology & Hepatology at the University Hospital in Lausanne.

Stefan Schreiber, MD, PhD
Professor of Medicine and Gastroenterology at the Christian-Albrechts University in Germany, Albrechts University Kiel, University Hospital Schleswig-Holstein, 24105 Kiel, Germany.

Bernard Testa, PhD
Emeritius Professor of Medicinal Chemistry and Pharmacochemistry at the Geneva-Lausanne School of Pharmacy. He was awarded in 2002 the Nauta Award on Pharmacochemistry by the European Federation for Medicinal Chemistry.
